Can carpet flooring make me sick?

Contempo is dedicated to providing low emission and low VOC carpet products. We offer chemical-free and non-toxic carpet. It can be true that lower quality carpet can make some people sick. The Environmental Protection Agency said that, like any other products used around the house, carpet can possibly be a source of chemical emissions. Carpet and adhesives can possibly produce harmful compounds which can result in people having eye and nose irritation, headaches, skin irritation, and difficulty breathing. Ask us which carpet has the lowest emissions so that you won’t have health problems in the long run. Air out the carpet in a well-ventilated area before installation so that the chemical emissions will not be given off inside your house. Open your windows and doors so fresh air can enter, and use fans to circulate air.

What kind of carpet flooring should I use?

The choice of carpet flooring usually depends on the owner. Most people are looking for comfort and durability. Of course, they also want something that will perform exceptionally well. You have to remember that when measuring durability there are three important factors to look at: fiber type, yarn twist, and pile density. Nylon carpet is considered one of the most durable carpet materials today.

If I choose carpet flooring, can I customize the color?

In terms of carpet color, you have a wide range of options to choose from since carpet can be readily dyed to whatever color you want. When choosing a carpet color, you have to remember that if you choose a light colored carpet, dirt and debris may show more evidently compared to a darker carpet. Multi-colored carpets and patterned carpets are best for hiding debris and dirt. You can use these kinds of carpet in high-activity areas.

What’s so important about knowing the carpet fiber?

The quality and performance of a carpet can be determined by the amount and quality of fiber that is used to make it, therefore it is important to know what fiber your carpet is made up of. The better the fiber, the more densely packed it is, and the better the carpet will perform. Thin and denser carpets have the ability to lose their appearance quickly.

What is the average cost of carpet flooring?

Carpet prices vary greatly depending on material and style. However, generally speaking, carpet can cost anywhere from $8 for regular carpet, to $200 for luxury carpet.  These prices reflect the price per square yard of material minus the installation costs.

Can I take carpet samples back home with me?

Absolutely!  It is highly recommended to ask for samples or swatches so that you can see what the best material and color is for a certain area or room. When choosing a color, you have to remember that colors vary during daytime and nighttime, so you might want to test out a color twice a day.

Do I have a say in the carpet padding?

Carpet padding is already included with the installation of your carpet, although you have the option to change it or upgrade it to a better one. We now carry several insulating, all natural, and sound reducing carpet paddings.

How do I choose carpet padding?

Some people don’t realize that carpet padding is as important as choosing the carpet itself.  In the long run, the performance of your carpet is heavily dependent on the cushion. You really have to make sure you’re using the right pad for the type of carpet you are installing. Basically, a carpet cushion acts as a base so that your carpet can retain its quality and appearance. You can choose a carpet cushion depending on its density and thickness. The rule of thumb for household installations is that the carpet cushion should be no more than 7/16 inches thick.

How do I deal with carpet flooring seams?

Carpet seams are unavoidable, especially during installation, but you don’t have to worry too much about them. More often than not, seams are placed perpendicular to windows and in between doorways so they won’t be as obvious. We do our best to place carpet seams in discrete places.

What is the difference between color fading and shading?

Color fading happens when oily substances are deposited on the carpet. This results in the lightening of the carpet color, as it is hiding underneath the oily film. On the other hand, shading is a less serious problem because the color of the carpet only changes as the direction of the pile changes. This is usually the result of vacuuming or footsteps. You can fight both by regularly cleaning your carpet.

Is carpet shedding normal?

For new carpet, it is very normal for shedding to occur, especially in the first few weeks after installation. You don’t have to worry if this happens. Vacuuming will remove the excess fibers. Shedding does not affect the quality and performance of your carpet.

What is carpet twist?

Twist refers to the number of times that a yarn or carpet fiber is turned. A vast majority of carpet have twists. As a rule of thumb, the more twists a carpet has, the better performance and better quality it has.

What is a manufacturer’s rating system?

Some manufacturers have developed a rating system to rank carpet. You should not compare different manufacturers’ ratings because they are not scientifically tested and are often measured by their customers’ opinions.

If I can see the carpet backing, is the carpet low quality?

Of course not. All carpet (except those made by weaving fibers) are all made with spaces between ends. Carpet lays flat on any floor. If you want to feel the thickness and density, you can put your fingers in the carpet pile. You have to keep in mind that when choosing the right carpet, you should try to pick the thickest and densest, since those are the carpets believed to perform better.

Can I mix cheap carpet with the best padding to save on money?

You can, but you must keep in mind that even if you have the best cushion, the carpet itself is equally important. A cheap and lower quality carpet might leave you dissatisfied with the carpet and it might not meet your needs.

How does steam cleaning work?

Steam cleaning should be done every few months to make sure that your carpet stays fresh and clean. The first step is to thoroughly clean your carpet either by vacuuming it or spraying it with cleaning solution. A steam cleaner will then deposit a heated cleaning solution onto your carpet, which will stick to the debris in your carpet. The machine will then work the solution into your carpet and loosen the debris and soil.

How frequently should I clean my carpet flooring?

There is no pre-calculated formula when it comes to the frequency of cleaning your carpet, but many factors must be considered before you know it’s time to clean your carpet. These factors include: vacuuming frequency, color and type of carpet, traffic, and the amount of time since your last cleaning.

What can I do to regularly maintain my carpet flooring?

To ensure that your carpet still performs well, you should regularly clean your carpet so that you won’t spend more on installing a new one. You can do five basic things: vacuum regularly (especially in high traffic areas), use different techniques given by the manufacturers, place rugs and mats at the entry points of your rooms, steam clean your carpets on a regular basis, and remove shoes before you enter a carpeted room.
